Thonet brought their industrial design prowess to designjunction, by demonstrating their amazing

mobile wood bending machine, used to craft the classic 214 chair.  Every hour visitors

where able to witness this manufacturing technique, dating back to the 1850s, as two Thonet

craftsmen demonstrated how the backrest of this famous coffee house chair is bent to perfection.

No other chair has ever been reproduced as many times as the 214: over 60 million and counting,

which makes this manufacturing master-class all the more special.

We are pleased to introduce to our range Träullit Dekor – Hexagon

Träullit Dekor is constructed using an environmentally friendly, recyclable material made from wood wool, cement and water. The open material structure reduces reflection of sound and contributes to restful acoustics in residential buildings, industrial premises and public spaces. Träullit can be mounted magnetically using magnets pre-fixed to the back of the product. Thin metal sheets are fixed against the underlying surface (wall or ceiling) and the decorative panels can then be fixed by hand and rearranged according to taste. The magnets have a life expectancy of more than one hundred years.

The natural components together provide many further functional characteristics:

“Material that breathes”

Träullit products contain two of the world’s oldest building materials – wood and cement – united as cement bound wood wool. The combination is simple and ingenious. Wood fiber gives the product a heat-insulating, heat retaining and sound-absorbing structure. Cement, a proven and popular building material, is the binder to provide strength, moisture resistance and fire protection.
Träullit products are sound absorbent, have high moisture diffusion, high air permeability and the capability of absorbing and releasing water molecules from the air. This allows the exposed Träullit discs to help even out the relative humidity (RH) in the room.

For those of us who like contemporary office furniture and a feeling of communion no matter how large the space, Dutch company Prooff are listening. They are committed to designing “intimate dialogue for public space,” advocating for the personal within the crowd. Their first endeavor in this largely philosophical plan is the #001 EarChair, a lounge whose ears “create a special room within the room.” Originally designed by Jurgen Bey in 2006, Prooff adopted EarChair as the company’s foundational product. Since then, Prooff has developed WorkSofa, PhoneBox, Niche, and SitTable—all products that encase you in privacy while you’re interacting with the outside world. Prooff, in fact, may present a remedy for most forms of agoraphobia—perhaps they should market EarChair as a remedy for social ills.

Acoustical Seating & Dutch Design

The upholstered lounge chair uses three different ears—small, medium, and large. Combine the ears of various sizes in order to create different configurations, effectively creating “a proper resting place in the middle of it all, a flexible & social meeting ground that can exist almost anywhere.” The ears, combined with the height of the chairs, establish a well-resolved acoustic, so you can partake in conversation, make a phone call, listen to music, or (let’s be frank) ignore your jabbering neighbors. Integrated arm-rest tables provide an additional degree of personal comfort—a place to rest a cup of coffee or pot of tea, or, heaven forbid, a laptop or textbook. All in all, Prooff gives you 10 EarChair models, depending on the size of the ears and the position of the tablet arms. These 10 multiply into a virtually inexhaustible array of seating arrangements that accommodate singles, doubles, trios, and so on. For example, three EarChair’s build a private chamber wherein the small-eared center chair accepts sound from the larger-eared flank chairs.

Prooff uses Kvadrat fabrics to upholster EarChair, so you can choose from a wide array of materials, from wool to stretch fabric to cotton. And, Kvadrat likes color. If you want thirteen shades of blue from which to choose or seventeen varieties of red, you won’t be disappointed. Prooff states that fabric choices “allow for every room to take on its own personal character.” More than that, each individual EarChair can reflect the personality of its intended user: it’s like a personal cocoon for metropolitan life.

Camira are textile innovators who design and manufacture contract fabrics for commercial interiors. They are an independent company recognised for product and environmental innovation and the name behind the celebrated Sting fabric made from nettles. Our origins go back to the 1970s, while Camira itself is the result of a management buy-out from the Interface organisation back in 2006. Their textiles impart colour, style, texture and design inspiration and work in beautiful harmony to create statement interior schemes.

CRAGGAN

The inspiration for Craggan comes from the weathered landscapes and the exposed moorland of the beautiful Northern England countryside around our UK head office. Rugged terrain and weather beaten limestone causeway provide the cue for the heavily textured neutrally coloured fabric surface, with bursts of accent colour reminiscent of moss finding its way into cracks on dry stone walls or spring flowers pushing up bravely through frosted grass. The fabric itself is a contemporary twist to a 25 year old traditional product that has come full circle and back into style. Originally launched in the 1980s, when chunky wools were all the rage, the look is now simultaneously textural yet surprisingly delicate.

STING

Sustainable Technology in Nettle Growing

Sting is a fantastic example of innovative, sustainable design combining commercial enterprise with scientific and agronomic research and development. We worked with academic partner De Montfort University on a four year UK government funded project to produce a sustainable textile using the common stinging nettle as a key raw material input fibre.

The fabric aesthetic is designed to exhibit its natural rustic charm in a fancy hopsack with a soft, tasteful colour palette inspired by the English countryside and hedgerow.  Imagine dandelion clocks billowing on the wind, acid green acorns behind russet autumn leaves, granite stone walls, heavy laden elderberry and bilberry bushes – you get the picture. The fabric name Sting is conveniently coined to stand for “Sustainable Technology in Nettle Growing.”

ADRENALIN

A rush of Adrenalin.

This elegant yet striking design is the brainchild of David Fox, award winning designer in the interiors industry. Fox has designed everything that goes on the inside of a chair, so he felt it was high time to create the skin that surrounds the object. Adrenalin is influenced by ‘liquid fluidity’, forming a convergence of graceful, fluid lines and an adrenalin rush breathing life into the soul of the fabric. There are swirling, seductive laces of colour which sit beautifully against the sheen of the sumptuous complementary solids. This luxurious fabric looks divine in plush hotel interiors and leisure environments.

DENIM

Fits all shapes and sizes!

The inspiration and thought process for Denim comes from the acclaimed ‘jeans’ fabric, originally designed in the 1950′s for cowboys. Now worn as an item of ubiquitous clothing throughout the world, Jeans come in massive array of shapes, sizes and even colours. Denim mimics this versatility.  It’s a wool rich plain weave upholstery fabric which has been created to appear clean, crisp and above all, functional. It’s a durable textile with practical qualities and inherent flame retardancy. Its utilitarian colourways, with a fine two tone shot effect, create a smart, well groomed finish for modern interiors. It looks sharp on task seating and works as a great base coordinate fabric for soft seating teamed with chunkier wools or subtle designs.

NUNA

Edgy debut fabric.

Acclaimed product designer, David Fox has created an edgy debut fabric for his first venture into textiles. Inspiration for this angular design was taken from Nunataks – stunning mountain peaks whose jagged ridges are exposed from dramatic ice fields below. The repetitive echo of stepped inclines becomes more subtle in shade as they silhouette into the distance, enhanced by the combination of four refined weaves. This sharp, distinctive design in both muted and intense colourways contrasts strongly with the softer palette of plain shades that complement beautifully.

HEMP

Camira are also in the process of launching a new sustainable product. Their new fabric for the contract market is made out of hemp fibre.

“A fabric of intoxicating natural beauty, Hemp is a heady mix of natures cleverest renewables. A wool and hemp blend of 31 naturally inspired shades with a soft handle, inherent flame retardancy and an exceptional eco story.”

As part of the launch they hired animator Dan Ojari to create a short stop-motion animation explaining the product. The video emulates the hemp plant growing and forming into something new to represent the ecological sustainability of Hemp and Camira’s use of natural materials in its contract fabrics.

RCA graduate and Sundance Film Festival nominee, Dan Ojari was briefed to create a video which demonstrates the environmental elements of the new Hemp fabric, whilst inspiring viewers to think about the origins and possibilities of hemp. The narrative takes the audience through the fabric production, demonstrating the sustainability of hemp.

Using stop-motion and reverse animation, the video engages them with detail of the yarn and lifecycle of the fabric. Starting and finishing with the hemp plant to represent the ecological sustainability of Hemp and Camira’s use of natural materials in its contract fabrics.

Ian Burn, Marketing Manager at Camira Fabrics said, “As part of the launch of our new Hemp fabric, we wanted to produce visually creative content to represent the natural production of Hemp.”
