Camira are textile innovators who design and manufacture contract fabrics for commercial interiors. They are an independent company recognised for product and environmental innovation and the name behind the celebrated Sting fabric made from nettles. Our origins go back to the 1970s, while Camira itself is the result of a management buy-out from the Interface organisation back in 2006. Their textiles impart colour, style, texture and design inspiration and work in beautiful harmony to create statement interior schemes.

CRAGGAN

The inspiration for Craggan comes from the weathered landscapes and the exposed moorland of the beautiful Northern England countryside around our UK head office. Rugged terrain and weather beaten limestone causeway provide the cue for the heavily textured neutrally coloured fabric surface, with bursts of accent colour reminiscent of moss finding its way into cracks on dry stone walls or spring flowers pushing up bravely through frosted grass. The fabric itself is a contemporary twist to a 25 year old traditional product that has come full circle and back into style. Originally launched in the 1980s, when chunky wools were all the rage, the look is now simultaneously textural yet surprisingly delicate.

STING

Sustainable Technology in Nettle Growing

Sting is a fantastic example of innovative, sustainable design combining commercial enterprise with scientific and agronomic research and development. We worked with academic partner De Montfort University on a four year UK government funded project to produce a sustainable textile using the common stinging nettle as a key raw material input fibre.

The fabric aesthetic is designed to exhibit its natural rustic charm in a fancy hopsack with a soft, tasteful colour palette inspired by the English countryside and hedgerow.  Imagine dandelion clocks billowing on the wind, acid green acorns behind russet autumn leaves, granite stone walls, heavy laden elderberry and bilberry bushes – you get the picture. The fabric name Sting is conveniently coined to stand for “Sustainable Technology in Nettle Growing.”

ADRENALIN

A rush of Adrenalin.

This elegant yet striking design is the brainchild of David Fox, award winning designer in the interiors industry. Fox has designed everything that goes on the inside of a chair, so he felt it was high time to create the skin that surrounds the object. Adrenalin is influenced by ‘liquid fluidity’, forming a convergence of graceful, fluid lines and an adrenalin rush breathing life into the soul of the fabric. There are swirling, seductive laces of colour which sit beautifully against the sheen of the sumptuous complementary solids. This luxurious fabric looks divine in plush hotel interiors and leisure environments.

DENIM

Fits all shapes and sizes!

The inspiration and thought process for Denim comes from the acclaimed ‘jeans’ fabric, originally designed in the 1950′s for cowboys. Now worn as an item of ubiquitous clothing throughout the world, Jeans come in massive array of shapes, sizes and even colours. Denim mimics this versatility.  It’s a wool rich plain weave upholstery fabric which has been created to appear clean, crisp and above all, functional. It’s a durable textile with practical qualities and inherent flame retardancy. Its utilitarian colourways, with a fine two tone shot effect, create a smart, well groomed finish for modern interiors. It looks sharp on task seating and works as a great base coordinate fabric for soft seating teamed with chunkier wools or subtle designs.

NUNA

Edgy debut fabric.

Acclaimed product designer, David Fox has created an edgy debut fabric for his first venture into textiles. Inspiration for this angular design was taken from Nunataks – stunning mountain peaks whose jagged ridges are exposed from dramatic ice fields below. The repetitive echo of stepped inclines becomes more subtle in shade as they silhouette into the distance, enhanced by the combination of four refined weaves. This sharp, distinctive design in both muted and intense colourways contrasts strongly with the softer palette of plain shades that complement beautifully.

HEMP

Camira are also in the process of launching a new sustainable product. Their new fabric for the contract market is made out of hemp fibre.

“A fabric of intoxicating natural beauty, Hemp is a heady mix of natures cleverest renewables. A wool and hemp blend of 31 naturally inspired shades with a soft handle, inherent flame retardancy and an exceptional eco story.”

As part of the launch they hired animator Dan Ojari to create a short stop-motion animation explaining the product. The video emulates the hemp plant growing and forming into something new to represent the ecological sustainability of Hemp and Camira’s use of natural materials in its contract fabrics.

RCA graduate and Sundance Film Festival nominee, Dan Ojari was briefed to create a video which demonstrates the environmental elements of the new Hemp fabric, whilst inspiring viewers to think about the origins and possibilities of hemp. The narrative takes the audience through the fabric production, demonstrating the sustainability of hemp.

Using stop-motion and reverse animation, the video engages them with detail of the yarn and lifecycle of the fabric. Starting and finishing with the hemp plant to represent the ecological sustainability of Hemp and Camira’s use of natural materials in its contract fabrics.

Ian Burn, Marketing Manager at Camira Fabrics said, “As part of the launch of our new Hemp fabric, we wanted to produce visually creative content to represent the natural production of Hemp.”

Hans Henning Jensen established a company in 1982 manufacturing monitor screen filters based on optically coated glass panels. After a few years, advanced computer technology eventually reduced the need for monitor screen filters. This development subsequently prompted the need for product development and new business opportunities. Hans daughter, Josefine Honoré, joined the company in 2003 convinced that, as a spin off from the glass filters, it should be possible to develop and manufacture memo boards based on a combination of her interior design ideas and her father’s experience in the field of technical glass. The Chat-Board® glass memo board was developed in close cooperation between father and daughter during the first year. Initially, only two sizes in white glass were manufactured using existing machinery. Demand proved that the product was accepted by the market, and it did not take long before a complete assortment of glass memo boards was created comprising many different sizes and exciting colours.

The stool arrived this morning at the design studio and now everyone is fighting over using it.

The Concept

Stand or sit – why not do both?

Does your body sometimes tell you that you’ve been sitting for too long? But you don’t really want to stand either? Or would you really like to take the weight off your feet but can’t do your work sitting down?

The solution is sway. This new stool designed by Burkhard Vogtherr is simple, elegant and healthy. And its uses are almost limitless: wherever sitting is best avoided and standing can get too strenuous, sway is in its element.

What makes sway so special is the fact that its leg is flexibly mounted. You thus automatically adopt a healthy, non-static sitting posture.

Burkhard Vogtherr (born 1942) has been running his product design business since 1972, working for renowned furniture manufacturers from all over the world. He is one of the best-known German furniture designers and has won many awards over the course of his career.

Expertise gained over the years in areas such as sitting posture at work and movement sequences is incorporated today in his designs for swivel chairs and conference furniture. However, Burkhard Vogtherr does not restrict himself just to form and design – he develops prototypes that stand in their own right. This often results in highly inventive furniture leading to patents across the globe.

Ergonomics

It is a well-known fact that we spend too much time sitting down and don’t move around enough. Many people notice this every day through their body’s signals: their backs ache or their shoulders are tense. We are aware that sitting motionless for a long time puts strain on the spine, spinal discs and muscles. It would be healthier if we occasionally did our work standing up. However, very few of us feel comfortable doing that. Conversely, those who stand too much at work may suffer from other complaints.

So what’s the best thing to do? sway solves the problem almost on its own! You don’t have to remember to sit in the recommended non-static manner – with sway’s flexibly mounted leg you automatically adopt such a posture. In the process, your back and leg muscles are also strengthened. What is more, sway takes the strain off your body when you work standing up.

Operation

In addition to the inclinable standpipe and swiveling seat, sway is also height adjustable. The seat height can be raised from 66.5 cm to 91.5 cm in increments of 2.5 cm. It couldn’t be easier: push the collar on the standpipe downwards, pull sway up to the required height and release the collar; it will slip back into position automatically and the telescopic section of the leg will click into place.

sway is not only practical but also lightweight. Weighing in at around only 4 kg, you can take sway with you anywhere.

The Cement Factory was discovered in 1973, it was an abandoned cement factory and partially in ruins, comprised of over 30 silos, underground galleries and huge engine rooms; Ricardo Bofill bought it and began renovation works.  He identified the program; The Cement Factory was to be used as architectural offices, archives, a model laboratory, and exhibition space, an apartment for him, as well as guest rooms and gardens.  He defined the space by demolishing certain structures, cleaning cement, exposing previously concealed structures and creating the landscape architecture by planting various plants such as eucalyptus, palms, olive trees and cypresses; renovation works lasted nearly two years.

my london’ installation by nendo for Established & Sons

British furniture brand established & sons celebrates the creative influence of its home city with the launch of a new initiative ‘my london’,
a series of global activities which look to the heart of the city and creative minds who live, meet and work there.
a selection of london-based talents and international names from the worlds of design, art and architecture have been invited
to work on collaborations, installations and objects that define their idea of the city.

london design week 2011 marks the first presentation of ‘my london’, developed with japanese architects and design studio nendo
for which they have interpreted the vision of creative london through an installation on view at the established & sons
wenlock road headquarters and showroom. incorporating designs from the company’s current collection as well as new products of 2011,
nendo has pasted hundreds of 16 randomly selected small maps of london neighbourhoods printed onto tracing paper,
hung on the walls of the exhibition space, creating a spatial feeling that recollects the particular atmospheric phenomenon of the london fog.
the installation is an accumulation of intimate individual feelings towards the city, becoming a physical, spatial expression of the dynamic,
always ambiguous face of the city.

Setting out from the ‘new architecture’ we present an organic furniture piece that is both sober and elegant AND following the ‘playmobilisimo’ trend that has greatly influenced its styling as a result of the success of the virtual world. Desks as pebble shapes are eminently suited to create beautifully organic combinations. These new shared hubs are flexible: one, two or seven pebbles can be fitted together in a myriad of different ways and are easily regrouped

Acoustic and linked wall elements serve as a flexible separation between the individual workstations. These lightweight walls are easy to move around and can be adjusted to suit all different shapes. The dividers also act as notice boards and come in fashionable powder box pink and timeless black. In developing Kei, we pursued simplicity, in style and in implementation.

This has resulted in a single work top shape and one single colour. A table top in lily-white with an elegant support frame in coffee bean black. The tricot fabric-upholstered dividers are available in different colours bringing the appropriate ambience desired. To the customers, this boils down to a simple and understandable concept: one desk as a building stone in a flexible organisation. We are promoting ‘collective individuality’, much in the same way as cells in a living organism, or pebbles on a beach.
